QotD: Let's Play Cards
What's your favorite card game?
At the moment, Limit Hold 'ems, though I retain a strong affection for 500 borne from several days of playing with friends at a New Year's Eve shindig some time ago.
My poker playing started on the night of the 2004 federal election, when a bunch of us, all staying down the coast for the weekend, played using matchsticks for chips until well into the morning. I then started up a bit of a blokey thing with friends, playing around once every 3 months or so, using a $20 buy-in which is enough to make it worthwhile but not so much to make people too grumpy with each other. It's a good opportunity to get together, drink a little if we're so inclined, and just generally talk shite over cards for a few hours.
And I'm obliged to note that thus far I'm really holding my own in terms of winning. Better than that, even. Ascribed nicknames of "Bluffalupagus" aside, I'm walking away from the majority of games significantly in the black. I seem to have taken to the game pretty well, the psychology of it all really appeals to me. Won a wonderful hand last Friday night by turning someone inside out after they'd been watching me closely all evening. After sitting on my buy-in for most of the night that hand kicked off a rush that netted me around two-thirds of the total pot. Don't think I'll really ever take it further than the occasional home game though. Could get a little "too" interesting for me otherwise.
